NaPoWriMo, day four

Inspired by this photo taken from someone else and from lovely memories of being at this exact place on the beach, taken from myself. Imperial Beach is my favorite place in the whole entire world, and the pier is my favorite place on the whole entire beach.

~~~~~~~~~~
seashell fingernails
build castles out of tiny
skeletons.
black sky and winter air
wrap
soft arms
around a little girl’s shoulders
on the pier,
tucking her jacket closer
to her body.
for one moment, i was
back
in her bones
there are star shards at the
water’s edge
mingling with sand and
sprinkling through her hair,
burning against her
skin.
when i wake up, i
know
that these pieces of the sea
and red velvet sky
will be left
buried
somewhere inside my soul.
